In Russia, the horse-guardsmen first appeared on March 30, 1724 as a company of the honorary escort of the Empress Catherine I, formed specially by the day of her coronation. After the coronation events the company was disbanded.

75 years ago in the Soviet Union there was established medal «For courage» which became the reward for soldiers for their courage and bravery in the battles at Lake Khasan and Khalkhin-Gol, on the Karelian Isthmus, in the fields of the Great Patriotic War and in the mountains of Afghanistan.
